Why should one service their air conditioner regularly?
Many times Homeowners fail to realize that their AC Unit is the most expensive system in their home and because it is a system, it needs annual care to maintain proper functionality. Simple things like changing your filters regularly and hosing down your AC Coils can not only prevent major damage to your air conditioning system but save you money on electricity as well.

Without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of it’s original efficiency for each year of operation. This means that the 12 SEER unit that you bought just a few years ago may be functioning like a 9 SEER unit today! The good news is that you can recover most of that lost efficiency through regular maintenance. Studies show that with regular tune-ups a unit will maintain up to 95% of it’s original efficiency. This means that the cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs. A properly serviced air conditioner will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

Many local air conditioning firms offer special prices at this time of the year. Some even offer annual service programs that insure that you will be reminded of the need to service the unit at the beginning of the cooling and heating seasons.

The service check should include cleaning the condensing unit coils, checking the amp draw of the compressor, oiling the fan motors, checking that belts are well adjusted, and checking the system operating pressures and temperatures against the manufacturers specifications. One of the most important items to check is the coolant level (previously known as Freon) in the air conditioner. A system that is only 10% low on coolant will cost about 20% more to operate! The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) recommends that coolant levels be checked every year.

Why hire an air conditioner technician?
Depending on your issue, sometimes you can inspect your air conditioner for the possible faults. But it is highly recommended that you contact an air conditioner technician for repairs. Most of the air conditioner manfucaturers require an hvac technician's quote to replace you a part for the warranty. Hence if your air conditioner needs a part replacement for the repair, which in most case is the only solution, then not hireing an air conditioner technician may be a costly mistake.

What are the different types of air conditioners?
There are a lot of different types of air conditioners which can fit for your specific needs. Few of them are :

Window Air Conditioners
One of the most common air conditioner types are window air conditioners. This type of air conditioner has a self-contained air conditioning unit that is placed in a window. All of the refrigerator components are included in this one box. Hot air is blown out of the end sticking out of the window and cool air is blown out of the part inside the room. Window air conditioners are typically most efficient when used for single rooms and homes that are smaller.

Ductless Air Conditioners
These types of air conditioners are also known as packaged thermal air conditioners. The air conditioning unit is split into two terminal units. One is called the condensing unit and the other is the evaporative unit. One of the biggest advantages to this type of air conditioner is that it is smaller and easy to install. Since they have no ducts, this type of unit avoids losing energy like those with ducts do.

Central Air Conditioning
Having a central air conditioning unit has many benefits. There are different sizes available to cool off any size home. It is always important to get the proper sized system for your home because one that is too small will not cool your home properly. When many people are getting their homes repaired, many times they will have their air conditioning upgraded to central air conditioning because it really is one of the best choices. It runs quietly, it does not have to be placed in a window, and it lasts much longer.

Portable Air Conditioners
This type of air conditioner has wheels and is made to be moved from room to room. It does not need to be installed into a window to work. There are a lot of benefits to having portable air conditioners. They are the ideal solution for rooms that are not easily cooled, such as a kitchen. They do not require professional installation and they are generally a more inexpensive choice than window units. The only downfall to this kind of air conditioner is that it is noisy when it is running.

Wall Air Conditioners
This type of air conditioner is very similar to the window units, and has the same functions. Instead of being installed in a window, these systems are installed in a wall. Wall air conditioners are effective at cooling single rooms and require a sleeve to be installed in the wall to handle the weight of the air conditioner. These are great for those that do not want to give up their windows for an air conditioner, or for those rooms that do not have windows ideal for units.

What are the few signs that you need to replace your air conditioner?
Certain telltale signs indicate it's time to consider replacing heating and cooling equipment, or improving the performance of your overall system. It may be time to call a professional contractor to help you make a change if:

• Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.

• Consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.

• Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old. Consider replacing with an ENERGY STAR qualified furnace, which is 15% more efficient than a conventional furnace. If you have a boiler, consider replacing
with an ENERGY STAR qualified boiler that is 5% more efficient than a new, standard model.

• Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up.

• Your cooling or heating equipment my have become less efficient. Some rooms in your home are too hot or too cold. Improper equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation could be the cause.

• No one is home for long periods of the day and you do not have a programmable thermostat. Install a programmable thermostat or have a good contractor install one and instruct you on its use — to start saving energy and money while they're away or sleeping.Your home has humidity problems.

• Poor equipment operation, inadequate equipment, and leaky ductwork can cause the air to be too dry in the winter or too humid in the summer.

• Your home has excessive dust. Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.

• Your heating or cooling system is noisy.

• You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment
